Vedic Math: Have fun with Mathematics!

by Lavanya Manour   |  04. July 2009

Students can also invent their own methods in calculation as they are not limited to the one correct method. This leads to more creativity.

There are many kinds of phobias which plague people throughout their lives. There are also a different set of phobias which haunt the students throughout their period of education. One such is the fear of mathematics which is experienced by majority of the students. But here is a way by which this dreaded subject can be simplified. Mathematics can be easily understood and it can become fun too, if one learns its offshoot branch, Vedic Mathematics.

This system of calculation has its roots in the Vedic Age. Vedic Mathematics is the name given to the ancient system of calculation, which was rediscovered, from the Vedas between 1911 and 1918 by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji, a scholar of Mathematics, Sanskrit and Philosophy who lived from 1884-1960. According to his research all of mathematics is based on sixteen Sutras, or word-formulae. The simplicity of Vedic Mathematics means that calculations can be carried out mentally. Students can also invent their own methods in calculation as they are not limited to the one correct method. This leads to more creativity. Vedic mathematics includes Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Calculus and other forms of Mathevedics.

The main benefit of Vedic Mathematics is that it enables one to carry out calculations mentally. Other advantages of vedic math’s include:
  • It reduces the burden of remembering large amount of numbers because it requires one to learn tables up to 9.
  • Faster calculations are possible when compared to the conventional methods.
  • It helps in increasing the concentration levels of a person.
  • It helps in the better understanding of the subject mathematics.
  • It is very simple, straight forward, unconventional and easy to understand.
  • Holistic development of the human brain takes place through Vedic Mathematics along with multidimensional thinking.
  • It also enriches our understanding of maths and enables us to see links and continuity between different branches of maths.
A few years ago many schools and colleges made it compulsory for the students to take up vedic mathematics as an extra subject. This helped the students to cope up with the subject and score well. It is also taken up seriously be a lot of MBA and economics students. Since the year 1999, a forum called International Research Foundation for Vedic Mathematics and Indian Heritage has been set up in New Delhi to promote the usage of this branch of mathematics.
