From California to Karnataka , for the Ultra Marathon

by nishal lama   |  14. November 2009

She loves running, in fact, loves it more than anything else in the world. She does home schooling and shares a keen interest in music too, and is a native of Sunnyville, California.

Sarah Oliphant is a native of Sunnyville, California and she wants to be the youngest to participate in marathons in all the seven continents

It’s the story of the 14-year-old Sarah Oliphant, who is in the city to participate in the Ultra Marathon on Sunday(http://mybangalore.com/events/bangalore-ultra-2009.html). In retrospect today, Sarah still recalls her first participation in a marathon that she had participated in two years ago, along with her brother, and shares her experience. “I remember, the first time I had run in a marathon was with my brother when I was just 12 years old. That was the first time I ever took part in a marathon, but I saw my brother was really fast and I couldn’t beat him at all,” smiles Sarah. “But,” said the teenage girl “I want to run and not race.”

With the soul quest of being the first youngest girl to take part in marathons in all the seven continents, Sarah is just a few steps away from accomplishing her dreams. What started as a mere hobby turned to become a passion, and now it’s one of the most important aims of her life. “I took up running just for the sake of doing it. There was nothing that I wanted to achieve. It started in my home town, and then took me across the country, and now I travel around the globe to participate in it. Now, it’s more of a personal goal,” said Sarah. But what could be her personal goal in this? “To become the youngest person to participate in marathons in all the seven continents,” replies the girl.

Sarah and father Arnold Oliphant are in the city to take part in the ultra marathon scheduled for Sunday, November 15

Having already participated in four different countries (America, New Zealand, Africa, Holland), Sarah is hopeful that she will be able to make her dream a reality when she participates in the marathon in Chile later this year, and Antarctica sometime next year. “My last marathon will be next year, when I will participate in one of the races in Antarctica; that’s when I will finish running in all the seven continents,” said Sarah.

Sarah is accompanied by her father, Arnold Oliphant (50), who also has been a part of all her marathons and feels that the journey the duo has made so far has been delightful. “I think, it’s been a great experience so far. When she first started running, we never thought that we would make it happen of this intensity. She just wanted to run, and I have been with her all this while,” corroborates Oliphant. He added, “Now, it’s more like a goal that she wants to achieve, and it will soon turn into a reality.”

Speaking about Bangalore, Sarah says, “It is a nice place. I had been to the Cubbon Park yesterday, and I think it’s just great place.” About the race she added, “I am excited for this will be first time I will run in dirt track, but my only worry is with the weather. I just hope that it’s not over humid on the final day.”

Having being a part of so many countries, all across the five continents (including India), Sarah feels that that it’s simply a joy to see people living with so much of diversity. “It’s such an experience to see people of such varied diversities living in this world world. It’s rich in culture and it has been a great experience so far,” corroborates Sarah.

The Ultra Marathon(http://mybangalore.com/events/bangalore-ultra-2009.html) is an initiative of Runners for Life, a running community based in Bangalore. People have been pretty responsive about the marathon, and the organizers now are expecting close to 600 people participating in the race on Sunday. The race will happen in four categories: 100 kms., 75 kms., 50 kms., 25 kms., 12.5 kms. and is starting at 5 a.m.
